About the team
The abbreviation SAB is made up of the first letters of the School of Architecture of the University of Bangkok. The team consists of 62 students from the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Interior Design.
The design approach of SAB follows some criteria that we have established in our project. Our goal is that the final design of our house reaches all of the following criteria:
1. Energy efficiency and energy consumption
2. Community aspect, the project should be friendly and useful to the community, quarter and city scale
3. User comfort, functional, easy to use
4. Environmental impact
5. Zero waste
6. Innovation and Viability
7. Passive comfort
We try our best to understand the context of the site. Architectural, historical and cultural aspects are important, including the way of living in the community because we believe that architecture is not just the built-environment and surrounding, but most importantly the spirit and happiness of people who encounter it.
The highlight of the design are two recycling materials: Ultra-high temperature precession (UHT) waste from milk boxes and Beer brewers’ grain waste from Beer production with good thermal qualities. Additionally, we selected four design strategies which are based on the ten challenges of SDE 21/22. We paid special attention to innovation (two reused materials; UHT and BEER brewers’ grain board) and on passive comfort (increasing the comfort and room climate of the building). Our four design strategies are the following:
• passive solar heat gain
• internal heat gain
• solar shading for windows
• daylighting analysis.
The heating of the building with a hybrid hot water heater (heat pump technology), floor heating and gas is an economical solution (gas supply only if needed). Innovation is the best solution for solar houses with comfort, low amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in construction materials and affordable construction. The UHT board (made from recycled milk boxes) is a heat collecting innovative design feature by its aluminium combustion. Due to the characteristics of this board, the surface will get warmer, when the board is exposed to the sun, which is an advantage in cold weather conditions.
The selected UHT board is waste from a milk box, and the BEER brewer’s grain is commonly affordable and daily products in Germany. Furthermore, the facade of the building is highly concerned with four layers and insulated glass. For energy saving and comfort additional a winter garden is planned, which can be used as a sunroom to warm up in autumn and spring.
Both the garden and playground are connected with vertically glass stairs. The winter garden is equipped with a sun-shading facade for summer, and the level of privacy can be adjusted by the angle of vertical fins. The design intention is leading to passive design with solar energy gains by PV panels on the roof. The angle of the PV collectors is optimised for the solar radiation for Wuppertal in summer.
