SDE editions
Celebrating its diversity, the Solar Decathlon Europe emphasises our responses to complex urban issues through the development of energy-efficient and resource-responsible design concepts. Participating teams distinguish themselves by putting their designs into a broad social and urban perspective, with the aim of shaping the cities of our future.

‘My participation in the SDE19 was a wonderful opportunity on both professional and personal level. This experience has opened the doors for me to a wider network of interdisciplinary actors in the field of environmentally conscious design. My SDE journey was an unforgettable adventure, and I would encourage everyone to take part in.’

After the first Solar Decathlon events in the U.S., growing European interest and involvement led to a 2008 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Spain. Spanish governmental officials signed to host the Solar Decathlon Europe in 2010 and 2012, the first Solar Decathlons beyond American soil. In 2012, the French government signed with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to host the SDE14 in Versailles.
Since 2016, the Energy Endeavour Foundation has been endorsed by the U.S. DOE and entrusted to foster the continuity and vitality of the Solar Decathlon Europe. The SDE19 took place 2019 in Szentendre, Hungary.
The SDE21 in Wuppertal hosts the Solar Decathlon Europe for the first time in Germany, with a new urban profile. Many of the eighteen international teams competing in Wuppertal have experience from previous Solar Decathlon editions, and others will compete for the first time. ●
