Solar Decathlon Europe in June 2022: programme published
Full speed towards 2022: The Solar Decathlon Europe will take place in Wuppertal in six months. The event for sustainable cities is all about urban building and living. The University of Wuppertal has now published the programme.
In six months, the motto in Wuppertal will be: Discover today how we will build and live tomorrow. From 10 to 26 June 2022, the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 (SDE 21/22 for short) will take place here. For its 20th anniversary, the most important university architecture competition in the world is coming to Germany for the first time.
The unique thing about the SDE 21/22 is that there will be actual construction – not models, but eighteen real and fully functioning buildings. Visitors can look forward to a glimpse into the future of our cities: more climate protection through less consumption of resources and more use of renewable energy.
Opening hours & programme highlights
The Solar Campus event site will be open to visitors on eleven days: 10-12 June, 16-19 June and 22-26 June 2022. The non-public days in between are reserved for the measurements necessary for the competition. At the heart of the event are the eighteen buildings that student teams from eleven countries will construct on the Solar Campus and with which they will compete.
Visitors are invited to participate in the teams' guided tours of their buildings. These take place continuously during opening hours. The individual tours are an excellent opportunity to experience sustainable construction in the buildings first-hand and get to know the young minds behind the innovative buildings.
Sustainable building and living at your fingertips
Each day of the event offers different programme items – designed by the participating teams and the numerous participating associations, institutions and societies from research and practice. “In addition to expert conferences and symposia, the accompanying cultural programme with country and culture days make the SDE 21/22 a multifaceted international event. Our motto is 'Sustainable building and living at your fingertips,” explains Director of Architecture Dr-Ing. Katharina Simon from the University of Wuppertal.
In addition, excursion days for schoolchildren with age-appropriate guided tours and exciting activities on the event grounds will also delight young sustainability enthusiasts.
Safety in times of pandemic
A comprehensive hygiene and safety concept will be applied at the event in June 2022. The SDE 21/22 will take place in summer, and the event area is approximately 44,000 m², but the organisation team is preparing for all conceivable scenarios. “In this way, we ensure a safe event for everyone involved or even indirectly touched. This applies, for example, the arrival and departure traffic as well as possible queuing on-site,” explains project director Dr Daniel Lorberg from the University of Wuppertal: “In addition to general measures, we particularly envisage limiting the number of visitors who can be in the area at the same time and a ticketing system. In this way, we not only counter possible risks but also relieve the traffic situation in the district at the same time.”
In parallel, the organisation team is focusing on digital offerings. Among other things, there will be 3D virtual tours through the buildings and live streams. Those who cannot be present in Wuppertal can follow the highlights of the SDE 21/22 online. ●
